The Surface Palpation Guide was developed as a self-directed learning component of surface palpation for the purpose of physical examination by health care professionals. The Guide provides guidance in understanding structures of the human body that are accessible to physical examination. More than 200 palpable neuromusculoskeletal and arterial structures are presented through a consistent integration of narrated video clips of the author performing palpation with a living subject, audio pronunciation of each palpable structure and the unique interactive 3D and cross sectional anatomy of the VH Dissector. Information including professional behavior in approaching and touching people in a clinical context, examiner position, patient positioning, sample instructions to the patient/client and a detailed explanation of the method of the palpation are provided in narrative form. The audio pronunciation feature provides particular benefit to people newly introduced to anatomical terminology, including international colleagues, who are learning English as well as anatomical terminology pronunciation.

A fundamental understanding and comfort level with this material and skill are essential for all health care professionals who are using palpation as part of physical examination.
